The South African Boatbuilders Business Council (SABBEX) recently held its annual Industry Awards, recognizing the remarkable achievements and unwavering spirit of professionals in the boating sector. The event, themed “We Are The Champions,” paid homage to the dedication, teamwork, and perseverance exhibited by industry members in the face of formidable challenges, much like the resilient Springbok rugby team.
Over 250 industry delegates gathered at the Kelvin Grove Club on June 6th, 2024, to honor their colleagues and celebrate the triumphs of the South African boating community. The event was officially opened by Alderman Vos from the City of Cape Town, a steadfast advocate for the industry who tirelessly lobbies within government tiers to ensure recognition of the sector’s economic benefits and job creation efforts. Alderman Vos remains committed to tackling challenges such as port congestion, access to water and quayside space, and the crippling skills shortage.
The keynote speaker was David Abromowitz, undoubtedly the “Godfather” of the industry. He played a pivotal role in creating so many companies in the industry, from the most prominent local chandlery, Central Boating, to yacht manufacturer Southern Wind. He was also one of the recipients of this year’s Chairman’s Awards.

Service Excellence
Winner: Kirby Arendse, Manex & Power Marine
Special Mention: Roger Paarman, Nexus Yachts
Kirby Arendse has been recognized for her outstanding service at Manex & Power Marine. Since joining in January 2018, Kirby has excelled as the primary contact for sales and support, demonstrating professionalism, clear communication, and a dedication to customer needs that have set her apart in the industry.
Marketing and Promotion
Winner: Kirsten Veenstra
Nominees: Kirsten Veenstra, Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing and Du Toit Yacht Design
Kirsten Veenstra’s passion for sailing and her innovative marketing strategies have significantly increased the visibility of Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing and its partners. Jonathan Paarman, known as “The Iceman,” has significantly contributed to the boat-building industry. From his surfing career to co-founding Nexus Yachts, Jonathan’s leadership and expertise in design and composites have left an enduring impact on the industry.
This year marked the introduction of the Chairman’s Awards, a distinguished category presented by the SABBEX chairman to honour exceptional individuals whose passion and commitment have significantly advanced the South African boating industry. These esteemed awards celebrate positive contributions that have set new standards and inspired future generations.
The recipients of the Chairman’s Awards are not always boatbuilders, manufacturers, sailmakers, or sailors. They could be lawyers, accountants, or dedicated auditors who have steadfastly supported the industry for decades. Through their unwavering commitment and dedication, these local heroes have played a pivotal role in helping the sector grow into the global powerhouse it is today.
Mike Giles
Mike Giles, a respected sailor with over 40 years of experience, was the first recipient. Known for his unwavering belief in the South African boatbuilding sector, Mike convinced American millionaire Peter Johnstone to set up the GUNBOAT facility in Cape Town.
This decision brought significant investment and new build techniques to the region. More recently, Mike played a crucial role in bringing the Cape 31 project to Cape Town with seed funding from Lord Irving Laidlaw. Mike’s contributions to the industry, from project management to mentoring new builders, have directed hundreds of millions of Rands of investment to South Africa. His dedication and belief in the local sector make him a true champion.
Mike Daries, Kult Creative
The second recipient, Mike Daries, is a creative powerhouse who has significantly contributed to the maritime sector’s branding and design. From designing logos and branding for Robben Island Ferries to creating the first logo and branding for SABBEX, Mike’s work has been instrumental in shaping the industry’s visual identity. His under-the-radar yet impactful contributions include designing Boatbuilders Guides, membership decals, boat show stands, and awards certificates. Mike’s dedication and creativity have made him an invaluable asset to the sector.
Dave Abromowitz
The final recipient is Dave Abromowitz, a sailor and creative entrepreneur often regarded as the godfather of the South African leisure boating sector. Over the past 55 years, Dave has been pivotal in transforming the industry from backyard builders to a world-class sector. His mentorship and encouragement have inspired many to aim higher and dream bigger. Dave’s lifelong dedication to developing and promoting the industry has made a lasting impact, earning him the title of a true champion.
While the evening was a celebration of excellence, SABBEX also shared bittersweet news about the departure of their General Manager, Thina Qutywa. During her five-year tenure, Thina’s exceptional leadership and tireless efforts increased SABBEX’s membership by over 20% and fostered a stronger relationship with the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC). Her commitment to excellence has been instrumental in taking SABBEX to new heights.
“Thina has been an incredible champion for SABBEX, and her impact on the organization and the industry as a whole has been immense,” said Bruce Tedder, SABBEX Chairperson. “While we will miss her dedication and expertise, we wish her all the best as she pursues a Master’s degree in Maritime Energy Management at the World Maritime University in Malmö, Sweden.”
The SABBEX Industry Awards serve as a testament to the resilience and passion that drive the South African boating sector. As the industry continues to navigate challenges and seize opportunities, events like these celebrate the people who are the driving force behind its success. With a strong foundation built on excellence, innovation, and camaraderie, the future of the South African boating industry shines brighter than ever.
