The annual SABBEX Industry Awards were hosted last week, featuring David Abromowitz as the keynote speaker. Undoubtedly, he is the most influential figure in the South African boating industry.

Starting his career as a pharmacist, David quickly realised his true passion lay in sailing and being on the water. Now a sprightly 80-something-year-old, he captivated us with stories about how the industry evolved from a group of backyard builders to an international manufacturing powerhouse. He humorously cautioned that his storytelling might include a tad of exaggeration. Nonetheless, he provided insightful background on the inception of many iconic South African boating brands.

David played a crucial role in establishing Central Boating, the most extensive chandlery in Cape Town, and was instrumental in the success of Robertson and Caine, a renowned boatbuilder and supplier to The Moorings. He also contributed significantly to the brokerage firm Abromowitz and Associates, mast manufacturer Sparcraft, sailmaker North Sails, RIB manufacturer Gemini, and rope manufacturer Southern Ropes, among others.

David’s influence extended beyond business. He was pivotal in rescuing the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) from the brink of bankruptcy, transforming it into one of South Africa’s most efficient and well-managed nonprofits. He also initiated the Wednesday night sailing tradition at the Royal Cape Yacht Club, a cherished custom that continues today. His mentorship of younger industry leaders like Bruce Tedder, Rob Sharpe, and the late Uwe Jasperson underscores his lasting impact.

Throughout his speech, the camaraderie and deep friendships David built within the industry were evident. These young men embarked on great sailing adventures in the early years, creating companies that allowed them to live their dreams on the water. David and his peers continue to inspire others to experience this passion, remaining active in their work, brokerage firms, and yacht clubs. Some original crew still frequent the Royal Cape Yacht Club, supporting sailing and mentoring new industry entrants.

This year marked the introduction of the Chairman’s Awards, a distinguished category presented by the SABBEX chairman to honour exceptional individuals whose passion and commitment have significantly advanced the South African boating industry. These awards celebrate contributions that have set new standards and inspired future generations. It was a privilege to personally present David with the Chairman’s Award for his continued dedication and support of the boatbuilding industry he helped build.

David Abromowitz’s legacy will endure long after his time with us. Reflecting on his life, he can be immensely proud of his accomplishments and the many lives he touched through his love of the ocean.
