Veda Pretorius steps down as the organisation’s chair following a three-year term in which Pretorius is credited with having played a defining role in strengthening GMBA’s global profile and shaping its strategic direction. Under her guidance, the organisation deepened its international engagement, strengthened relationships with industry associations, supported developing markets, and provided leadership on key issues, it said.

Succeeding Pretorius is Richard Haws, a respected marine industry executive with extensive experience across business development, marina and infrastructure planning, and international market growth. Haws “brings renewed drive and vision to the role” according to the group, leveraging insights into both established and emerging marine economies.

GMBA further announced the departure of consultants YP Loke and Annika Lindqvist from its roster. Singapore-based Loke, a central figure in the Asian recreational marine sector and a founding member of GMBA, announced his retirement while Sweden-based Lindqvist steps down to pursue opportunities in other sectors.

With these transitions, GMBA says the organisation is looking to recruit new consultants to represent Sweden and Singapore, and is speaking with experienced professionals with strong regional networks and deep industry insight to ensure GMBA continues to offer comprehensive global coverage.

It is with profound sadness that GMBA announces the passing of Jouko Huju, a distinguished leader and visionary in the marine industry. He leaves behind a legacy of collaboration and unwavering dedication that has profoundly shaped the Finish Boating sector and touched the global marine industry sector.

Veda Pretorius, Chair of GMBA, commented, “Jouko was the Founder and Chief Operating Officer of Global Marine Business Advisors (GMBA), a role in which he demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to the growth and development of marine and boating companies worldwide. Under his leadership, GMBA established a robust network of industry experts across 22 countries, providing invaluable strategic guidance for companies seeking to expand their market presence. Jouko was both colleague and friend to all GMBA consultants. Myself and fellow GMBA consultants are devastated by this loss and our thoughts go out to his family.”

Throughout his illustrious career, spanning over four decades, Jouko played a pivotal role in promoting export initiatives and trade development within the marine sector. Jouko’s influence extended to the Finnish Marine Industries Federation where he served as CEO for 21 years, growing the organization to represent 280 companies and establishing it as a cornerstone of the Finnish marine industry’s development.

His contributions to the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) further underscored his commitment to advancing the industry on a global scale, serving two terms as President, and shaping policies that benefited the marine community.

His most recent tenure as Executive Director of the International Federation of Boat Show Organizers (IFBSO) was marked by a comprehensive turnaround strategy that revitalised the organization, enhancing its global standing and fostering collaboration among boat show organizers worldwide.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jouko was a mentor and inspiration to many. He was known for his passionate advocacy for sustainable practices within the boating industry and his steadfast belief in the power of collaboration and dialogue among stakeholders. His work with various public-private partnerships exemplified his dedication to fostering meaningful connections in the export sector. He was a firm believer in lifelong learning, having completed both an MBA and a Doctorate in Business Administration, and he instilled this value in those around him.

Thom Dammrich GBA USA, a lifelong friend and colleague remarked, “As I reflect on the remarkable journey we shared over the years, my heart is heavy with the loss of my dear friend and colleague, Jouko Huju. Jouko was not just a leader in the marine industry; he was a guiding light and a source of inspiration for all of us fortunate enough to work alongside him. “

His passion for the boating sector was unparalleled, and his unwavering commitment to promoting sustainable practices and fostering collaboration transformed not just businesses but organisations. Jouko had an extraordinary ability to connect people, to see potential where others saw challenges, and to ignite a shared vision for a brighter future in the marine industry.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jouko was a true friend. He had a way of making everyone feel valued and heard, always taking the time to listen and offer support. His kindness, wisdom, and infectious enthusiasm for life will be deeply missed.

As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind—a legacy of mentorship, collaboration, and an unyielding belief in the power of community. Thank you, Jouko, for everything. Your impact will be felt for years to come, and you will always be remembered with great affection and respect.”

Jouko is survived by his wife Leija and two daughters.

That’s the question on everyone’s mind lately. But here’s the plot twist: it’s more likely that someone who knows how to harness AI’s power to upskill and boost their efficiency will be the one to replace you.

I recently caught the closing keynote from The Superyacht Forum 2024 at METSTRADE on YouTube. The speaker? ‘Reluctant futurist’ Henry Coutinho Mason. Though I couldn’t make it in person, I’m glad I didn’t miss out.

WOW!

He highlighted several fascinating trends, including how social impact has become the latest status symbol and how laboratory products are outshining their natural counterparts. His provocative question – ‘What if “fake” was seen as cleaner, more ethical and more luxurious than “all-natural”?’ – really got me thinking. While I’m on board with synthetic diamonds, I’ll admit printed meats are still a bridge too far for me.

Listening to him, I could physically feel my brain straining as I was trying to compute the implications of his many insights and theories. These include the concept that AI is a powerful tool to make us more human and a better version of ourselves, as it comes alongside us as an education and skills training partner.

The example he mentions is how Magnus Carlson, the young chess prodigy, honed his skills as a chess player by using AI as a sparring partner. He mentions the possibilities of onboard superyacht training where the crew could wear Rayban META smart glasses and an AI assistant could consistently monitor and, where necessary, correct their work. The opportunities are just endless.

He concluded with a fascinating live demonstration showing how AI can help us map out the future WE want – limited only by our imagination.

If you’re interested in understanding how AI could transform your business, I highly recommend watching this talk. As this technology rapidly evolves, insights like these become invaluable for navigating the future.

The world’s leading marine equipment trade show, Metstrade, is undergoing a significant rebranding to reflect its evolution from a traditional trade show into a comprehensive global platform for the leisure marine industry. The fresh new logo has a more relaxed font with inviting marine blues. They have even introduced a new slogan – “Propelling Growth. Harbouring Innovation.” – which encapsulates its core mission.

A key element of the rebrand is introducing a new signature flag design, which draws inspiration from traditional maritime signal flags. This design incorporates the letters M and T in a simplified color scheme, creating a distinctive visual identity that pays homage to maritime heritage while embracing modern design principles.

The rebranding initiative will be implemented gradually throughout the year, with the complete new brand identity set to launch in early 2025. During this transition period, the new branding will be progressively rolled out across all digital channels, including the organisation’s website, newsletter communications, and social media presence.

“ Metstrade is the premier B2B event in the recreational marine sector worldwide, and it continues to innovate and grow each year. The rebranding is a great example of their continued efforts to not only stay relevant but be an industry leader in information sharing and creating a platform for collaboration”, says GMBA Chairperson, Veda Pretorius.

Last week, I had the privilege of visiting Jo Fensham Yacht Upholstery’s factory in Montague Gardens, Cape Town, where I met with owner and CEO, Tariq Fensham. As Cape Town’s leading soft furnishings manufacturer, they serve an impressive client roster, including prestigious boat builders such as Robertson and Caine, Southern Wind Shipyard, Two Oceans Marine, and Kinetic Catamarans.

Upon entering the factory, one is immediately struck by its calm and professional atmosphere. The workspace is thoughtfully organised, with dedicated areas for production components separate from bespoke yacht projects. It is clear that Tariq recognises the vital importance of her team. She has dedicated the past year to identifying new talent, upskilling existing staff, and implementing new efficiencies with the help of a new production manager. Coming from the pet food industry, he could give independent and objective input to the existing processes and systems.

The company’s approach to yacht furnishings is comprehensive. The team works closely with boatbuilders and yacht owners to provide turnkey interior and exterior soft furnishings solutions. When complete renderings and 3D CAD files aren’t available, they conduct detailed photographic scans of vessels. These scans are transformed into precise 3D CAD files, ensuring cushions are manufactured to exact measurements. This attention to detail and precise scanning specifications has resulted in minimal returns and high client satisfaction. For clients in the Indian Ocean Islands of Mauritius and Seychelles, the company sends technicians to conduct photographic scans on-site. When vessels later dock in Cape Town, custom-made cushions and soft furnishings can be fitted within hours, offering clients bespoke, handcrafted products of international quality at competitive rates.

While the company has built its reputation on providing exceptional service and world-class craftsmanship to local boat builders, its vision extends beyond South African shores. Their ambitious plans include manufacturing for European production yards and expanding into the superyacht sector. However, these international aspirations come with unique challenges. Shipping costs can double the local price of products, necessitating careful cost analysis. To address delivery timelines, their long-term strategy includes establishing a European warehouse to ensure timely delivery while maintaining their renowned quality standards.

Looking ahead, Jo Fensham Yacht Upholstery plans to open a showroom in the V&A Waterfront, bringing them closer to their client base. This facility will showcase its full range of luxury yacht linens and feature a dedicated space where owners can explore material and other product options. The showroom will also include a luxury hospitality section, offering everything from cutlery and crockery to linens and soft furnishings. The company proudly represents top South African luxury interior brands like Mungo and Falucca Linen.

The company’s team of 41 staff members, working under Tariq Fensham and her husband and life partner, exemplifies the exceptional quality of South African craftsmanship. Their commitment to precision and quality not only rivals international standards but positions South African craftsmanship at the forefront of the global yacht furnishing industry.

Despite numerous global authoritative sources (World Bank Group1, United Nations, 2, 3, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)4,5, etc.) evidencing both the legal case and the proven benefits of gender equality, the latest findings of a survey carried out the recently formed ICOMIA Diversity Committee, demonstrated that over a third of boating industry respondents did not consider this matter worthy of industry focus and consideration.

The same survey, along with the ground-breaking “Marine Industry Global Workplace Study” produced last year by Sounding Trades Only in conjunction with the NMMA and others, indicates, however, a problem that does indeed require some serious attention.

Aimed at organisations rather than individuals, the ICOMIA survey was answered by 50 entities, 20% of these representing over 100 employees. The results are startling, particularly at the top decision-making level. Findings from the questionnaire indicated 95% male board Chairs/CEOs in the marina industry and that 33% of entry-level staff and only 28% of senior staff were female. Out of 30 “harbour masters”, arguably a title in need of a gender-neutral revision, only three were not identified as male.

The 2024 Marine Industry Global Workplace Study, which counted on over 700 individual respondents and two focus groups, tells us that:

Women’s salaries are 18% lower than those of their male counterparts. This disparity is more pronounced at the highest leadership levels.

Whilst the job satisfaction rate in the marine industry “significantly exceeds global workforce levels […] women report lower satisfaction levels compared to men.

Men are predominantly represented in sales, customer service, and product/project management roles…Women are primarily found in marketing/ communications, administrative, and customer service roles.

Beyond evidence of a significant wage gap, this points to occupational gender stereotyping, reflecting an established assumption that certain jobs are inherently suited for one gender over another. Both research efforts show that that work is required at all levels; but especially in supporting the advancement of women in the workplace.

We should be questioning whether the marine industry is responsible for turning a blind eye to perpetuating systemic barriers, including underrepresentation in decision-making roles and lower overall earning potential for women.

Lessons learned

The ICOMIA Diversity Group first met in February of last year. Diversity and Inclusion is of course a far-reaching and comprehensive topic that involves recognising differences and fostering an equitable environment, encompassing race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientations, religion, age, disability and socioeconomic background. Taking a structured approach however, one of the first priorities has been gender equality.

We have been very fortunate to hear from a host of experts during our gatherings online. The World Sailing Trust demonstrated how product design, particularly in terms of protective clothing and led principally by men, had in some cases failed to account for distinct physical characteristics of the female form that require specific design considerations – leading to ill-fitting and potentially unsafe sailing gear.

We were presented with startling insights regarding the generation gap and how a Gen X approach to receiving and responding to direct instructions, relying on direct and traditional methods and used to working reasonably autonomously, diverged dramatically from the preferences held by Gen Z workers who required more feedback, support and workplace flexibility. Younger workers’ reliance and familiarity with technology also often comprised having a completely difference perspective on how tasks should be carried out. This meant that traditional methods of communicating directives were generating conflicts and failing to be effective.

Another interesting conclusion from these presentations was that efforts to promote gender equality, with individual groups separately carrying out inspiration and productive work, needed to be better coordinated to be more effective.

Moving forwards

We can start by challenging societal bias by encouraging diversity of thought at all levels. This could involve ensuring that genders other than male are instructive, for example, in product development and design, safety and accessibility, employment processes and marketing and communication strategies. Different perspectives can help question traditional practices.

By increasing the visibility of women and their achievements in traditionally male-dominated and leadership roles, we can help challenge gender stereotypes, inspire women considering working in the industry, and help make this as more of a norm. Efforts can already be seen in promotional media for certain boat shows and industry marketing materials.

There are some great examples of companies already investing in continuous training, becoming aware of some of the root causes of inequality through gender analysis, and the development of gender-sensitive indicators, and starting to adapt their procedures and routines to be more inclusive.

A brighter future

Beyond the creation of the Diversity Committee, 2024 saw an important push in the area of the gender mainstreaming with the first Women in Nautica conference, laudable initiatives in trade shows to showcase women’s success stories and discuss pertinent challenges, various gender-related surveys and a series of articles across industry media referencing the situation.

Impressive EU-based projects, such as WINBLUE and WIN-BIG have burgeoned over the couple of years, focused on emerging sectors within the Blue Economy and offering training, guidance and resources.

For the year ahead, ICOMIA Diversity Committee efforts will focus on developing educational resources and guidelines together with outside experts, sharing best practices and experiences and conducting further surveys to gather data and gauge improvements.

Most French marinas have been completed from the sixties to the nineties, often with public investments, to foster regional coastal planning and respond to the rising boating practice. The mayors of coastal towns wanted at all costs to have their own marina to show their pride, stimulate attractiveness, and offer berthing infrastructures to local inhabitants. Thus, catch-all facilities have been developed, able to receive pleasure boats of all types, roughly from 5 meter to 15 meters allowing all boat owners to find an adequate berth and fulfill their expectations… The demand was there; marinas were full of diverse boaters paying an affordable price, and everywhere on the seaside, waiting lists were the norm.

The success of the marina industry shows signs of weakness

40 to 50 years later, the market has changed. The first generation of berth holders is in the twilight of its boating practice, seeking to sell the boat or having already given up. Marinas, situated in the most coveted places, are still full, thanks to their attractive location. Operators have sometimes changed from municipal marinas to territorial public operating companies gathering several facilities on a regional scale. This trend stands out clearly, and local communities adopt such a business model to enable economies of scale, hire qualified managers and establish more flexible administrative management. Stronger together, these new public marina groups can be empowered to make wiser and well-considered decisions.

Other yacht harbours, often situated in less-favoured places, are in a delicate situation, struggling to attract new customers. This is not visible yet, since 80% of boat occupancy still gives a nice view on the postcard, but the expected income is not met anymore, and investments are reduced to the minimum. Reasons can be various (geographical situation, tidal constraints, locks or sills hindering the site’s accessibility…), but one of the key factors is a lack of image and market positioning.

Crozon-Morgat, a typical municipal marina, completed 50 years ago.

Speaking to all consumers can end up speaking to none

I would compare one of these marinas with a single hotel aiming to attract backpackers, honeymooners, businessmen and wealthy customers in the same hotel, offering general-purpose amenities and seeking to satisfy everyone, for finally running the risk not to please anyone.

Nowadays, customers want to know what awaits them! However, few marinas worry about and have formulated a mission statement, chosen a market positioning and identified target customers. I must say that takes the biscuit! When talking about a marina basin in the heart of a city, a deepwater marina accessible, whatever the tidal conditions or even a charming yacht haven located in a fishing village… these are not all the same! They don’t address the same customers! Having a marina that is famous for one-design regattas is different from a marina dedicated to cruising multihulls or a marina targeting classic yachts. And what about a Premium marina offering high-end services: if this is not highlighted, it is in competition with a low-cost marina nearby.

Local berth holders defend their self-interest, and most are not concerned about hospitality services. They live in the surrounding area, never shower in the marina, don’t care about the WiFi network, and rarely use a power pedestal to charge their boat batteries. Thus, they push to maintain the berthing cost as low as possible since they have basic needs. Moreover, they have access to the local politicians and the town’s mayor and can pressure the local administration, which is naturally attentive. They know that when municipal elections arise, their vote matters!

Marina Baie des Anges, famous private marina on the French Riviera is subject to a major refurbishment.

Municipal marinas have missed the train

The consequence is that municipal marina operators tend to be blind or at least curtailed in their potential development despite their participation in regional marina associations’ workshop meetings. They complain about market change but cannot adopt an offensive strategy to broaden their target groups and give visibility to their marinas. They still rely on the local clientele for the majority of their income, while hoping to be recognised by those living in the major inland metropolitan areas (Paris, Lyon, Lille, Strasbourg…) as a potential option. However, they do little to highlight their best features at a time when digital communications and smart marinas are essential!

Leading marinas show the way while other ones are stranded

Fortunately, the most dynamic marina operators of the country, which are regional public companies on the Channel and Atlantic, and often private groups in the Med, have a better understanding of the customer needs, have qualified staff members in their teams and ensure a good promotion of their destinations. The irony is that they wouldn’t need to do all that, since they are located on the most attractive shores and are highly demanded. But they could be arguably in competition with other European markets, and they know it, while the gap with municipal marinas is ever more prominent. It is to be hoped that municipal marinas open their eyes one day, get out of their bubble and embrace the 21st Century, otherwise a significant part of the national berthing capacity will be neglected! This is why the issue of the medium-term survival of the municipal marina model must be questioned to get out of the trap!

The beautiful Bay of Cannes once again hosted one of Europe’s most prestigious maritime events, the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024. Over six spectacular days, the show attracted more than 55,000 visitors from 130 countries, showcasing the finest in marine innovation and luxury across two stunning locations: Vieux Port and Port Canto.

© Cyril Charpin – CYF 2024

This year’s festival was a testament to both scale and sustainability. The show demonstrated the industry’s remarkable breadth with over 700 boats on display, ranging from intimate 5-meter vessels to impressive 45-meter superyachts. The new Power Boat Marina at Port Canto was particularly impressive, doubling the port’s capacity with 3,000 square meters of space and 450 meters of quay, hosting 175 motorboats and yacht tenders.

“The trade fair has grown again by a few areas,” notes Falk Morgenstern, GMBA Germany, who attended the show. However, he observed an interesting trend: “The yachts in the higher price segment (from 55 feet) were better attended and in demand,” suggesting a shift in market dynamics.

The festival’s commitment to sustainability was evident through its dedicated “Green Route,” highlighting eco-conscious exhibitors and featuring an increasing number of hybrid and electric-powered yachts. This environmental focus reflects the industry’s growing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

Knut Heiberg- Andersen, GMBA Norway, brought an interesting perspective from the Scandinavian market: “Arriving to the Cannes show, we had already participated in 2-3 shows here in Scandinavia with fairly depressing results.” However, his experience at Cannes proved more optimistic. Despite lower attendance in the first few days compared to previous years, the quality of interactions was notably higher. “We constantly had people on the boats, and everyone around us had the same,” he observed.

The show’s layout proved highly effective, with 360 boats at Vieux Port and 340 at Port Canto, including an impressive showcase of 70 superyachts along the Jetée and Superyachts Extension. The distribution between new and pre-owned vessels (535 new motor boats and 45 previously-owned yachts) offered visitors a comprehensive market view.

While both consultants noted some market hesitancy, Falk mentioning “a clear reluctance among customers,” the weekend saw increased attendance and activity. French dealers reported making valuable connections for upcoming seasons, suggesting a resilient market despite current economic challenges.

The Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 again proved why it’s becoming one of Europe’s most important boat shows. With 640 exhibitors, 120 world premieres, and coverage from 665 journalists from almost 40 countries, it continues to set the standard for boating exhibitions while adapting to changing market conditions and environmental considerations.
